Tips For Choosing A Catchy Sari Sari Store Business Name

Choosing the perfect name for your sari-sari store is important for attracting customers and building a recognizable brand.

Below are key tips to help you craft a unique, memorable, and catchy name that stands out and connects with your audience.

Keep It Short and Simple (Para madaling matandaan)

A short and simple name is easy to remember and pronounce. It also makes it more likely that customers will recall and refer to your store.

Plus, shorter names are easier to fit on signage and marketing materials. Think of names like "Tindahan ni Aling Nena" or "Sari-Sari Express" which are both concise and clear.

Consider the ease of recalling the name, especially in the context of your community. Avoid complicated words or phrases.

Keep it straightforward for everyone.

Fun fact: When Ministop was bought by the Gokongwei Group, they ran a naming competition. The chosen name will win 50,000 pesos worth of Robinson's gift certificates. Here's my submission:

ministop naming

Suffice it to say, I didn't win.

On a different note, my mother used to run a sari-sari store. It was called "Jam's Store" named after my younger brother. At the time, "Jam" was quite a unique name so it stuck in people's minds.

Be Different And Original ('Wag gaya-gaya!)

Creating a unique store name sets you apart from competitors. Avoid copying or closely imitating other stores' names.

This practice does not only help in building your brand identity but also in avoiding potential legal issues.

Avoid imitating what this store did:

fake 7 evelyn

I cannot verify if this is true or just a meme, but slapping 7/11's logo into your store and replacing it with "Evelyn" (probably the owner's name or their kid's name) is a big no-no.

And certainly don't follow the famous (or infamous) Potatong Na-Corner, no matter how funny it is (it's very funny, we admit)

potatong na korner

Think about what makes your store unique. Do you have special products or services?

Reflect that uniqueness in your store name. A name like "Tesoros ni Juan" or "Paninda Ni Puring" can highlight what’s special about your store.

Local Connection (Yung may konek kung nasaan ka)

A great name with a local twist resonates well with the community. Use Filipino keywords or themes relevant to your area.

For example, if your store is near a well-known landmark, like "Tindahan sa May Kanto" or "Barangay B-Ball Store," it helps customers associate your business with a familiar place.

Your sari-sari store serves your community, so naming it in a way that connects locally can build customer loyalty.

It reflects pride in your local heritage and makes your store feel more authentic and welcoming.

Use Alliteration Or Rhyme (Madaling bigkasin; madulas sa dila)

Alliteration (repeating the initial consonant sounds) and rhyme make names catchy and enjoyable to say.

Examples are "Lola Lita's Sari-Sari" or "Happy Hapit Store." These naming techniques can make your store’s name stick in people’s minds.

It adds a touch of creativity without being overly complex. This approach can turn a simple name into something engaging and memorable.

Brainstorm and Ask for Feedback ('Wag mahiya humingi ng payo)

Don't hesitate to gather store name suggestions from family, friends, and potential customers.

Utilize social media or conduct informal polls to see what business name ideas people like best. You can also use online store name generators (use ours!) for inspiration.

Feedback can provide valuable insights into how your chosen name is perceived.

The goal is to create a name that feels right and ensures that your community connects with your brand.

Important: Define Your Sari Sari Store’s Brand Identity

Defining your sari sari store's brand identity involves understanding who your customers are, what values your store represents, and how you stand out from the competition.

It's all about making your store relatable and attractive to your potential customers.

Who’s your target audience?

Identifying your target audience is essential for creating a brand that resonates. Who are the people you hope will become loyal customers?

Consider factors like age, gender, income, and interests.

For example, if your store is in a residential area, families and local residents will be your primary customers.

Therefore, your store name should appeal to that demographic. You want a name that aligns with their daily needs and feels familiar.

Also, ensure your name is available and not already used by another business nearby.

Decide on your personality and values

Your store’s personality and values set you apart. Do you want to be seen as friendly and approachable or as a store that champions eco-friendly products?

Imagine your sari sari store as a person. Is it the reliable, “always there for you” type, or maybe the cool, trendy option that’s ahead of the curve?

Defining this personality helps create consistent marketing messages and ensures your name aligns with your store's values. This makes it easier for customers to connect with what your store stands for.

What is your Unique Selling Proposition (USP)?

Your USP is what makes your store unique. It’s the special sauce that convinces customers to choose you over others.

Is it competitive pricing, a unique product range, or perhaps exceptional customer service?

Identify what makes your store different and highlight this in your branding efforts.

This could be included in your slogan or store name.

For example, if your store offers hard-to-find imported goods, your store name should reflect that uniqueness.

You might also emphasize your USP in your online presence to attract a wider audience.

Legal Considerations In Naming Your Sari Sari Store

When naming your sari-sari store, it's important to address several legal considerations to avoid potential issues. You'll need to ensure that your chosen name isn't already in use and doesn't infringe on any existing trademarks.

Check For Domain Name Availability (Optional)

Even if you don't plan to sell online now, having a domain name that matches your business can be useful.

90% of the time, sari-sari stores do not need to put up a website, unless you offer online ordering with pickup and delivery services.

First, you can use domain search tools to see if your desired name is available as a web address. Sites such as GoDaddy or Namecheap make this process easy.

Checking for domain availability can also help you avoid legal problems.

If someone else owns the domain, they might also hold a trademark on the name. This could lead to disputes or even legal challenges.

You don't want that hassle while starting your business, right?

Having an available domain—or a unique variation of it—also helps in branding your business online.

Quick Tip: If you want to go the extra mile, you can create a simple website or social media page to attract more customers. But again, this is not necessary.

Avoiding Trademark Issues

Before finalizing your sari-sari store name, checking for existing trademarks is a must.

Use the Philippines' Intellectual Property Office (IPOPHL) website to search if someone else has already registered the name. This can save you from potential legal battles.

If your desired name is already taken, think about tweaking it slightly. Maybe add your name or a Tagalog word to make it unique.

For example, instead of "Lydia's Sari-Sari Store," you can go for "Lydia's Pinoy Sari-Sari Store."

Pro Tip: Have 2-3 names as a backup. When we started our laundry shop, we wanted to go with Alagang Kamay. When we went to BIR to register the business (this was before online registration was a thing), we found that there was already an Alagang Kamay registered! Our mistake was not having a backup name so we spent about two hours brainstorming for new names.

Keep in mind that using a well-known brand name or a very similar name can cause legal problems. Always double-check.

Stop poking for loopholes. I pestered my lawyer friend about the legalities of putting up a Minute Burger ("minute" as in "small") beside Minute Burger. She told me that's impossible.

It’s better to be safe than sorry. Doing this step diligently helps you establish your business without future legal hassles.
